You do not need to arrive at a consultation knowing which treatment to choose. A more useful starting point is a simple sentence: “Here is what I would like to change about my smile.”

What do you want to change?

If your main concern is shade, ask about whitening. If it is a tooth’s outline, a chipped edge, or an uneven appearance, ask whether veneers or another approach would address it. Your dentist should examine your mouth before recommending treatment.

How do the options compare?

What changes? The shade of natural teeth. The visible front surface, including color and shape.
What is involved?Bleaching products used at home or in the dental office.
What should I discuss?Stain type, sensitivity, and existing restorations.

What matters before treatment?

Tooth decay or gum disease may need care first. Whitening can cause temporary sensitivity. Veneers may need repair or replacement over time. A cosmetic plan should include both the initial treatment and how you will look after your teeth afterward.

What should you ask at a consultation?

  • Which part of my concern could this option address?
  • What would you recommend leaving unchanged?
  • What are the alternatives, including postponing treatment?
  • What does the written estimate include, and what ongoing care should I plan for?

Common questions

Will whitening change the color of existing veneers?

No. Whitening acts on natural teeth and does not lighten veneers, crowns, or fillings. Ask your dentist how existing dental work affects a coordinated shade plan.

Are veneers reversible?

Veneer treatment generally involves removing enamel and is not reversible. Discuss tooth preparation, future maintenance, and other options before proceeding.

Which option should I ask about first?

Start with the change you want rather than a procedure name. Describe whether your concern is color, shape, spacing, or a combination, then ask what options are suitable after an examination.
